Matchmaking in Ireland
Editor Yao Nian. The Lantern Festival has long been one of the most ceremonious dates in the lunar calendar, bringing an exciting climax to the Chinese New Year celebrations and marking its end with spectacular displays of lights, fireworks, acrobatics and a bowl of sticky rice dumplings. The rarely mentioned part about the festival is that it was traditionally seen as “Chinese Valentine’s Day” since the celebrations were one of the few days in Imperial China when maidens were allowed to freely leave the house and mingle with the crowd and possibly find love.
While Qixi, or the Double Seven Festival, has been replaced as the Chinese equivalent to Valentine’s Day now, we take a look at how the romance flourished hundreds of years ago. But with time, the festival slowly lost its religious connotations and was transformed into a national carnival and a massive matchmaking party, as it was also one of the rare occasions for people to stay out disregarding the strict nighttime curfew imposed otherwise.
One of the customs for which China is renowned for is that majority of marriages were arranged. This was so up to the s. Since then, and particularly so in recent times, young persons and the not-so-young, in increasing numbers, are making their own arrangements, literally putting the so-called ‘matchmakers’ out of business. It was a business for which good money was paid, but even in the days when matchmaking was the preferred custom, many young persons were choosing their mates.
There are many love stories in Chinese lore that would put their western counterparts in the shade, as many of the vast array of love poems written to lovers over the ages attest. The reasons given by the Chinese for choosing mates for their children are interesting, to say the least, and they offer some very practical and far-reaching benefits. They know that sometimes young people are so smitten and are sometimes driven by biological urges they can’t think sensibly.
And with the urges satisfied, they lose interest. Then there is the consideration of children. They think the best time to procreate is early adulthood, when both parents are young and strong, so they will produce healthy and strong children. Another reason given for choosing your child’s spouse was the consideration of family.

Michelle works to develop Circles with older people living in the community in Doncaster. Part of her role involves matching volunteers with opportunities to get involved. In her most recent blog she talks about the challenges of matching volunteers and how to alleviate the frustration they may feel when waiting for a match. Circles in Doncaster is set in the community with older people who live in their own homes and want to get out and about more as they have become socially isolated or feel lonely.
With this in mind, we held a focus group of volunteers, some who had been with the project at the beginning and a new volunteer. We learnt that some volunteers were willing to do more to support the project to make the changes it requires to continue to grow. We know that it is frustrating to wait for a match, so we are now having discussions with volunteers about what they may like to do whilst waiting.
We found that some volunteers may benefit from a break from the one to one volunteer role as their Focus Person may be in hospital or respite. We are forging links with Doncaster college and WEA which gives us exciting opportunities to do different activities and bring like-minded focus people and volunteers together. This also enables volunteers to do things side by side with their focus person so they are seen as equals in their relationships.
